St. Petersburg FL to the Gulf Shores: A Dog Mom’s Road-Trip Adventure

As a dog mom of 3 there’s nothing I enjoy more than hitting the open road with my pups in tow. Our latest adventure? A road trip from St. Petersburg, Florida, to the stunning Gulf Shores of Alabama. The jeep packed with our gear, treats, toys, and plenty of water, we embarked on an unforgettable Christmas vacation, creating memories at some of the most dog-friendly destinations in the area..

____

Our first destination was Pensacola Beach, where the pups were ecstatic to romp around Pensacola Beach Dog Beach West, where they could dig in the sand and splash in the water to their hearts’ content. After spending a bit of time there we ended the day by heading over to Fort Pickens, located within the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

This historic fort offers dog-friendly trails and stunning views of the Gulf so, the pups and I wandered along sandy paths, marveling at the mix of history and coastal beauty.  They also have a BARK RANGER program and The Blondes were able to pick up their site specific dog tags.

Our next adventure was the Davis Bayou area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in Mississippi. This hidden gem offers scenic trails and opportunities for wildlife spotting. The pups were fascinated by the sights and smells of the bayou, and we enjoyed a peaceful hike under the shade of towering oaks and pines. It was the perfect way to wind down before completing our journey.

We had hoped to pick up some BARK Ranger swag from Davis Bayou National Seashore but the visitor center was closed.

Next stop, Dauphin Island, Alabama. Known for its laid-back vibe and natural beauty, the island’s pet-friendly Dauphin Island Beach was a hit with the whole pack. We explored the miles of white sand beach, and took in views of the Gulf from every angle. The island’s charm and relaxed atmosphere made it hard to leave.

The following day, we checked out Johnson Beach, A quiet and pristine beach, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, that straddles the Florida-Alabama border. This was a beautiful place to take The Blondes for an afternoon walk to catch the sunset. Although dogs are not allowed on the beach it offers an amazing trail oceanside where pups can enjoy sniffing around the edge of the sand while you soak in the 360 scenic beach views.

On our way home, we headed to Panama City Beach, known for its sugar-white sands and turquoise waters. While some areas of the beach are off-limits to dogs, we found a perfect spot at the designated dog-friendly beach area near Pier Park entrance 57. We soaked in the sun and watched as a whole pod of dolphins frolic in the ocean.

Our last destination before making it home was Manatee Springs State Park, a true gem in the Sunshine State. This serene park features crystal-clear springs. We strolled along the springs, shaded by cypress trees, and although dogs aren’t allowed on the boardwalk trails it was a great area to stretch our legs and soak in the natural beauty.

Our road trip had been a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and bonding time, reminding me once again why traveling with my pups is the best way to see the world. If you’re a dog mom (or dad) looking for your next adventure, pack up the car and hit the road—the Gulf Coast awaits!
