Pup-Approved Beaches: Dog-Friendly Destinations on the Gulf Coast
In November 2023, I packed up the Jeep and hit the road with The Blondes and spent the last year exploring Florida, uncovering dog-friendly destinations and activities to enjoy.

If you’re like me, the beach is your happy place. Whether it’s a peaceful walk on a rainy day or a sunny afternoon spent swimming in the ocean and soaking up rays, there’s nothing better. As a dog mom and beach bum, I’ve made it my mission to find the best dog-friendly beaches where The Blondes can Rock N’ Roll in the sand and play in the ocean.
In this post, I’ll be sharing our favorite dog-friendly beaches on Florida’s West Coast (so far), complete with helpful tips (post Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton) , must-know amenities, and what makes each spot so special. Let’s dive in!

An Off leash beach for pups and their humans, thoughtfully designed to ensure a tail-wagging good time. Check out some of these standout amenities you’ll find at Brohard Paw Park & Beach:
Off Leash Dog Beach: Yes, the beach itself is a leash-free zone, so your dog can roam freely, splash in the waves, and make new furry friends.
Fenced Dog Park: Before heading to the beach, your pup can burn off some energy in the fenced dog park, complete with shaded areas and plenty of space to run and play.
Wash Stations: You’ll find shower rinse-off stations for both you and your pup near the restroom, picnic tables and parking.
Dog Waste Stations: You’ll find waste bag dispensers and trash cans throughout the area,
Parking and Other Amenities:
- Plenty of parking & it’s FREE
- Restrooms
- Shaded Picnic tables off the beach for a less sandy lunch or break from the sun
- Dog- Friendly Restaurants, Bars, Ice cream and shopping right down the road
Note: as of 11/28/2024 the dog park area is still closed but the beach is open and amazing. We always recommend checking out the water quality before heading to any beach. We also suggest that you always double check pet policy before going in case things have changed.
Fort Desoto

Fort De Soto Park, located in Pinellas County, Florida, is a spacious off leash dog beach heaven. Check out some of these standout amenities you’ll find at Fort De Soto
Off-Leash Dog Beach: One of the best dog beaches in Florida, with a designated area where dogs can run free, splash in the waves, and dig in the sand to their hearts’ content.
Paw Playground: Right next to the beach is a fenced in Paw Playground, with separate sections for large and small dogs. Both the Small and large sections are spacious so your dogs can really run.
Wash Stations: Found inside the Paw Playground, so you can rinse off sand and saltwater before heading home.
Dog Waste Stations: Numerous waste bag dispensers and trash bins for easy cleanup.
Parking and Other Amenities:
- Plenty of Paid parking throughout the park. Paw Tip: Download the Park Mobile App to pay for your day parking pass.
- Restrooms
- picnic areas in the shade,
- Historical Fort and Walking trails if you get the urge to explore off the beach.
- Boat launch & water sport opportunities

Note: Fort De Soto has been closed since Hurricane Helene. Make sure to check their site for reopening date.
Honeymoon Island State Park

Honeymoon Island located in Dunedin, Florida, has a stunning on leash beach with award-winning views of Caladesi Island and the Gulf.Check out some of these standout amenities you’ll find at Honeymoon Island State Park:
On-Leash Dog Beach: A dedicated dog friendly beach section, where you and your pup can explore, roll in the sand and play in the water. Leash Max Length: 6ft.
Scenic Walking Trails: Within the park beyond the beach, you’ll find dog-friendly scenic trails to take your pup on a stroll after your time on the beach, we explored the Osprey Trail, which you can find on Alltrails.
Wash Stations: Found in the parking lot right before the trail that leads to the dog-friendly area making it easy to rinse off sand and saltwater before heading home.
Dog Waste Stations: Waste bag dispensers and trash bins are placed throughout the park. I recommend bringing your own just in case you aren’t close the the nearest station

- Ample parking, but there is a small admissions fee to get into the park.
- restrooms, and picnic facilities near the dog-friendly areas.

Clearwater Beach North

Honeymoon Island located in Dunedin, Florida, has a stunning on leash beach with award-winning views of Caladesi Island and the Gulf.Check out some of these standout amenities you’ll find at Honeymoon Island State Park:
On-Leash Dog Beach: Dogs are welcome on the north end of Clearwater Beach, provided they remain on a leash. This area is perfect for a stroll along the shoreline looking for sandollars
Dog Waste Stations: Waste bag dispensers and trash bins are conveniently placed, making it easy to clean up after your pet.
Parking and Other Amenities:
- Ample paid parking available
- access to restrooms are available nearby
- Walking distance to several dog-friendly Restaurants, Bars, Ice cream shops and shopping
